The Mauritanian Journalists Union (SJM) has announced its absolute support for the serious steps towards reforming the media sector in Mauritania, which were taken by the higher authorities in the country, in response to the sector’s reform demands, which the Union presented to the President of the Republic during his meeting with its executive office last year.
During a news conference held in Nouakchott on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, SJM President Mohamed Salem Ould Dah added that his union highly appreciates the report accomplished by the National Committee for Media Reform, calling on the authorities to expedite the implementation of its recommendations.
He explained that SJM seizes the symbolism of this day to praise the level of consultation and positive dealing in the reform steps taken by the higher authorities in the country, as well as the level of good dealing with it within the state apparatus, saying it is also looking forward to a real partnership with the Mauritanian government, regulatory bodies, and media institutions, to develop journalistic work and raise the level of the media message in the country.
Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Dah reviewed the most prominent challenges facing the media sector in the country and its workers, especially under the COVID-19 pandemic and its repercussions on the sector, stressing the need to improve the conditions of journalists in private and public press institutions and to grant them their full rights.
He added that SJM, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day celebrated on the third of May every year, extends its sincere congratulations to all members of the media family in Mauritania, wishing them more progress, success, and patience with the job of difficulties in the service of the country and the citizen.
