President of Republic supervises Launch of Environment Component of Nouakchott Emergency Development Program

On Monday in Nouakchott, HE President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani, oversaw the launch of the environment component of the emergency program for the city of Nouakchott.

HE the President of the Republic attended a presentation on the areas of this component, its implementation mechanisms and its potential role in protecting the environment and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Under this component, an environmental assessment of some sites in Nouakchott will be carried out, four ponds will be converted into recreation sites, and seedling production sites will be activated at the Tansouilm nurseries and at km 17 on the Rosso road, to create a green space in the city’s nine municipalities and plant trees; and three administrative buildings in each municipality will be afforested.

In addition to creating a public park in Sector 4 of Nouakchott’s green belt, launching awareness campaigns on urban waste management, and purchasing and distributing sorting containers.

In a speech on the occasion, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Ms. Massouda bint Baham, explained that the environment-related axes of the program of the President of the Republic, H.E. Mohamed Ould Cheikh Al Ghazwani, constitute a reference for the sector to reach a sustainable development that achieves a balance between current needs and the ability to meet future needs.

In recent years, our country has achieved significant results in the field of environmental governance and sustainable development, including the establishment of an environmental police law, the improvement of the legal framework for the environment, the development of several laws, the adoption of the investment plan for the Nationally Determined Contribution, and the preparation of the fifth national communication on climate change.

These achievements include the adoption of a decree on the protection of Star Bay, the decree establishing natural wildlife reserves in several provinces of the country, the establishment of a mobile environmental monitoring team, the opening of thousands of kilometers of fire lines in agricultural and pastoral provinces, the restoration of thousands of hectares of degraded land through the production and planting of thousands of seedlings, the stabilization of sand dunes, the restoration of degraded soils, and aerial seeding.

She detailed the sector’s actions in the areas of urban solid waste management, climate change and pollution control, noting that the environmental component of the Nouakchott Emergency Development Program was designed to respond to a number of sustainability challenges by developing water sites of environmental importance, strengthening the green belt of Nouakchott, creating green spaces, afforestation, waste management and pollution control.
