The Minister of Equipment and Transport, Mr. Mohamedou Ahmedou M’haimid, took part Thursday, via videoconference, in the work of an extraordinary meeting of the ministers of transport of the countries of the African Union, devoted to discussing the passport vaccination program and its effect on air transport and tourism activity in Africa.
The meeting aims to postpone the entry into force of the generalization of the circulation of the vaccination passport until after 2023, and to discuss measures for monitoring the evolution of the health crisis following the COVID-19 pandemic considering the vaccination campaign and preventive measures that limit the movement of people.
The meeting is also expected to discuss the procedures in place to deliver the vaccine to the continent.
During the meeting, the AU transport ministers were briefed on the roadmap proposed by the Union Commission, which provides for joint action to achieve 60% immunization by at the end of 2022, standardize the health documents required for travelers, digitize transit procedures, and set up a coordination mechanism in the field of public health and revitalization of joint institutions.
In a speech on the occasion, the Minister of Equipment and Transport expressed Mauritania’s support for the vaccination passport initiative, while sticking to the health objectives set, including working to achieve a 60% vaccination rate by 2022.
