UNA and the General Council of Islamic Banks and Financial Institutions are organizing a seminar for journalists on the concepts of Islamic finance
The Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UNA) and the General Council of Islamic Banks and Financial Institutions organized a virtual seminar on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, entitled: “General Concepts and Applications of Islamic Finance: An Introduction for Journalists,” as part of the implementation of the memorandum of understanding between the two parties, aimed at strengthening cooperation and the exchange of knowledge between the Islamic finance and media sectors.
The seminar, comprising three sessions, served as an interactive platform to enhance participants’ understanding of the fundamental concepts of Islamic finance and its applications, as well as its role in the global financial system. It highlighted its main instruments, such as sukuk, shares, and investment funds, while emphasizing the frameworks for compliance with Islamic Sharia and the sector’s contribution to sustainable development, the promotion of financial inclusion, and poverty reduction.
Discussions also focused on the relationship between the media and Islamic finance, emphasizing the importance of accurate and informed media coverage to raise public awareness.
The Council’s Secretary-General, Mr. Hamza Baawazir, stated that the seminar reflects the Council’s approach aimed at strengthening the role of the media as a strategic partner in supporting the Islamic financial services sector, emphasizing that raising awareness is a key driver of growth and development in this sector.
He added that training journalists in specialist knowledge helps improve the quality of media coverage and meet the public’s needs, thereby supporting the industry’s development and sustainability.
For his part, the Union’s Director-General, Mr. Mohamed Ben Abdel Rabbo Al-Yami, explained that the initiative forms part of UNA’s efforts to equip journalists from member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation with the tools needed to cover specialist sectors effectively. He noted that Islamic finance constitutes an important pillar of economic development in many countries, which requires enhancing media understanding and ensuring accurate coverage and public engagement.
He welcomed the cooperation with the General Council, describing it as a strategic step toward strengthening the role of the media in supporting sustainable development.
