President of Republic Receives MNPT’s Annual Report.

On 25 December, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, received the report of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (MNPT) for the years 2023-2024.

This was during an audience granted to Mr. Bekaye Ould Abdelmalek,  the MNPT’s President.

At the end of the meeting, the MNPT’s President made a statement to the Mauritanian news agency, indicating that he had had the honor of meeting the President of the Republic and presenting him with the MNPT’s annual report for 2023-2024.

He added that the meeting reviewed the general situation and conditions of prisons and places of detention in general, as well as some of the successes achieved by the MNPT over the past period, which has seen two consecutive missions since its creation in 2016 until today.

The meeting was also an opportunity to review the various challenges and issues the Institution is working to overcome by equipping itself with the means necessary to accomplish its mission.

Mr. Ould Abdelmalek thanked the President of the Republic for the confidence he has placed in them, the outgoing members of the Mechanism, all the international partners, notably the Special Fund for the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nouakchott, the local judicial and security authorities in charge of prisons and all the partners in the process.
