Mauritania Congratulates African Union Structures for Invaluable Efforts for Stability, Peace, Development

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania has commended the considerable efforts made by the structures of the African Union and its various organs, under the leadership of His Excellency Mr. Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, president in office of the African Union, and His Excellency Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairman of the Commission of the African Union, to achieve stability, peace, and development.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad Monday, Mauritania expressed its concern over the increase in hotbeds of tension, armed conflicts, famines, violent extremism, and organized crime on the continent, in addition to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, of which the number of cases is close to five million.

The statement insists on the will of the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who emphasized, through all regional and international forums, that despite its importance, international support to the continent to face the pandemic is not sufficient to achieve the assigned objectives. Insofar as it is essential to cancel the continent’s debt for it to be able to cope with the pandemic and its social and economic consequences.

Here is the full text of the statement:
Under the theme: “Arts, culture, and heritage: incentives to build the Africa we want”, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania commemorates 25 May 2021, the anniversary of the creation of the African Union, like all the countries of the continent, adhering to the principles of independence, freedom, peace, and justice on which the African Union was founded. It is for these principles that our country worked at the dawn of independence, to create the Organization of African Unity in 1963, to make it a framework that represents the peoples of the continent, embodies its principles, preserves the dignity of the African, and realizes their hopes for global development and their aspirations for a better future.

From this point of view, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania wishes to commend the achievements of the African Union and its efforts to ensure security and peace, the rule of law and human rights, as well as integration at the continental level.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania takes this opportunity to salute the considerable efforts undertaken by the various structures of the Union under the leadership of His Excellency Mr. Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, President in office of the Union African Union, and His Excellency Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairman of the African Union Commission, to achieve Stability, Peace, and Development.

Mauritania notes with great bitterness the constant resurgence of hotbeds of tension, armed conflicts, famines, violent extremism, and organized crime, and the continued spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cases of which are approaching five million, making the epidemic and its repercussions on African societies and their economies a priority to the detriment of other development programs.

In this context, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, wished to emphasize, through all regional and international bodies, that international support to the continent to face the epidemic, despite its importance, is not enough to achieve the assigned objectives and it is essential to cancel the continent’s debt to enable it to cope with the pandemic and its social and economic consequences and to benefit from African integration to tackle work for Agenda 2063.
