Training Workshop on Human Trafficking

The work of a training workshop on human trafficking, under the theme: “Detect, Investigate, and Prosecute” began, Monday in Nouakchott, for the benefit of officers of the judicial police, magistrates, and representatives of the civil society.

The objective of the meeting is to build the capacities of the authorities and civil society organizations responsible for the fight against human trafficking in Mauritania.

The participants will focus, over five days, on themes relating to the concept of human trafficking, its impact on victims, and the evaluation of the impact of the protection offered to victims.

The meeting is moderated by national and international experts.

Opening the workshop, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Mohamed Ould Ahmed Aida, highlighted the dangers of human and drug trafficking.

He added that human trafficking ranks third among illicit activities after drug and arms trafficking.

“Mauritania has put in place an inclusive strategic framework for the fight against terrorism and human trafficking. Its legal arsenal was harmonized with international criteria in the field, in application of the directives of the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, in addition to strengthening the skills of magistrates and improving their material conditions”, as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice put it.

For her part, the First Counselor of the Embassy of the United States of America in Nouakchott stressed that Mauritania has taken concrete measures to strengthen its legal framework in the fight against human trafficking and illegal migration.

As for the representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Nouakchott, he praised the collaboration of the Mauritanian government.

He finally underlined the relevance of the Mauritanian legal arsenal in the field.

The workshop opened in the presence of the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior and Decentralization and the Legal Advisor to the Minister of Justice.
