The Constitutional Council announces Election of Candidate Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani as President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania

The Constitutional Council announced on Thursday afternoon during a public session held under the chairmanship of the President of the Council, Mr. Diallo Mamadou Bathia, that the candidate Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, was elected President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, in the first round of the presidential elections that took place on June 29, 2024, due to obtaining the absolute majority of the votes expressed and constitutionally required.
The President of the Council affirmed that in view of the expiry of the legal deadlines without receiving any appeal against the provisional results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, after reviewing all the voting minutes and reports submitted by the representatives of the Constitutional Council in the electoral districts, and in line with the proper functioning of the Constitutional Council, and the requirement to announce the final results without delay, the Council approves and announces these results.
The Constitutional Council after having reviewed election related deliberations, constitution, legal order, statutory law and decrees, declared that
Decisions: 001-002-003-004-005-006 and 007 issued on 16/05/2024 respectively by the Constitutional Council on the validity and acceptance of the candidacy of Messrs. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, Mohamed Lemine Murtaji El Wafi, Hamadi Sid El Mokhtar Mohamed Abdi, Ottoma Antoine Slimane Soumare, Mamadou Bocar Ba, Eid Mohameden Mbarek, and Biram Dah Abeid, for the presidency of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in the 2024 presidential elections.
Deliberation No. 2024/003 issued by the Constitutional Council on May 20, 2024 related to the publication of the final list of candidates for the 2024 presidential elections.
In view of the expiry of the legal deadlines without the Constitutional Council receiving any appeal against the provisional results
Having reviewed the deliberation No. 000019 issued on 01 July 2024 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the ratification of the provisional results of the 2024 presidential elections, which took place on 29 June 2024;
– After reviewing all the voting minutes and reports submitted by the representatives of the Constitutional Council in the electoral districts.
Whereas the proper functioning of the Constitutional Council requires the announcement of the final results without delay. After hearing the Rapporteur, and after deliberations, acknowledges and declares that the first half of the presidential elections that took place on June 29, 2024 he gave the following final results:
Number of votes 1.074.208
Null cards 53.787
Neutral cards 31.608
Votes Expressed 988.813
Turnout 55.6%
The votes expressed are distributed as follows:
Mr. Mohamed Cheikh El-Ghazwani / Obtained: 554.956 votes, i.e. 56.12%
Mr. Mohamed Lemine Al-Murtaji Al-Wafi / received 9.722 votes, or 0.98%.
Mr. Hamadi Sidi Mokhtar Mohamed Abdi received 126.340 votes, or 12.78%.
Mr. Otoma Antoine Soumare / received 20.360 votes, or 2.06%
Mr. Mamadou Bocar Ba / received 23.617 votes or 2.39%
Mr. Eid Mohameden Mbarek / Received: 35.288 votes or 3.57%
Mr. Biram Dah Abeid / Received: 218.546 votes, i.e. 22.10%
Accordingly, the candidate, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, was elected President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in the first round of the presidential elections held on June 29, 2024, for obtaining the absolute majority of the votes expressed and constitutionally required, in accordance with Article 26 of the Constitution, to be declared President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
His term of office will begin on August 2, 2024 immediately after the end of his ongoing mission. This decision shall be published in the Official Gazette of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
