Minister of Economy: Mauritania and the European Union Have Strategic Relations Covering all Fields

The Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Abdessalam Ould Mohamed Saleh, stressed that the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the European Union have strategic relations that include the political, economic, commercial and cultural fields, stressing that the Union is Mauritania’s largest trading partner and the largest provider of financial grants for the implementation of economic programs.

The European party noted with satisfaction during this meeting the assumption by the Islamic Republic of Mauritania for the presidency of the African Union, stressing that this presidency would strengthen Mauritania’s geostrategic position in Africa and globally, he said in a statement to the Mauritanian News Agency after the political meeting between Mauritania and the European Union held Tuesday evening at the Prime Ministry under the chairmanship of His Excellency Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Bilal Messaoud.

He said that the European delegation praised the visit of the Spanish Prime Minister and the President of the European Union Commission to Mauritania and the valuable results reached during this visit, expressing its sincere thanks to the members of the European delegation for their continuous and strong support to Mauritania.

He added that the meeting was an opportunity to review challenges at the international and regional levels and crises, noting in this regard that the Mauritanian side expressed its deep concern about what is happening in the Gaza Strip and the need to end the war as soon as possible, bring in humanitarian aid, and work for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, and that this matter remains of great interest to all Mauritanians.

The meeting also touched on the situation in the Sahel and the role Mauritania can play in bringing views closer, he said.

For his part, Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union, H.E. Mr. Guillim Jones, said that this meeting dealt with many topics of common interest and main at the national level, which will benefit everyone, especially in the field of infrastructure support and development, in the field of energy, green hydrogen and fishing support.

He congratulated the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, on his election as Chair of the African Union, noting that this presidency will be a source of new strength to strengthen the ties of the Union as well as the ties between the African Union and the European Union.

He stressed that the partnership between Mauritania and the European Union has now become a strategic partnership, noting that the Union’s agenda with Mauritania is related to the association with a close neighbor, for which the Union seeks to achieve stability and prosperity.

He pointed out that the situation in the eastern basin – where Malian refugees are flowing – requires urgent security, humanitarian and development support, stressing readiness to support Mauritania in this area.

He added that the EU is committed to strengthening cooperation with Mauritania in order to dismantle human trafficking and smuggling networks and combat illegal migration while ensuring the protection and respect of the fundamental rights of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees.
