President of Republic Takes Part in “Dakar 2” Summit on Food Sovereignty in Africa

On 25 January, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, took part in the “Dakar 2” summit on food sovereignty and resilience organized in Dakar under the theme: “Feed Africa”.

Before the opening of the Summit, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani met his Senegalese counterpart, HE. Mr. Macky Sall accompanied by Mr. Akinwumi Adesina, the President of the African Development Bank (ADB).

The opening ceremony of this meeting, organized by AfDB, was chaired by the Senegalese President.

During the three days of the Summit, African Heads of State and Government will discuss topics relating to the mobilization of public financing and that of development partners and the private sector to exploit the agricultural and food potential of Africa.

The summit aims for high-level political commitment, support from development partners and private sector investment around production, markets, and trade to ensure increased food production in African countries.

Sharing successful experiences in the field of food and agriculture in selected countries to double agricultural productivity and develop infrastructure is also one of the topics that will be discussed during the summit in addition to the

logistics necessary for agro-industrial transformation to create competitive food and agricultural markets and value chains.

Opening the summit, the Senegalese President, Mr. Macky Sall, stressed the need for Africa to ensure food sovereignty and sustainable land management, promote the opening up of production areas, and develop infrastructure for storage, processing,

and preservation.

The aim is to support smallholders, especially women and young people who must have greater access to land, adding that the continent must be able to feed itself and help feed the rest of the world.

“Dakar 2” is intended to be a summit of action and the bet of modern African agriculture for the achievement of food sovereignty.

The various other speakers emphasized the need to initiate a new dynamic to develop the agricultural sector in Africa to eradicate famine, guarantee food security, create value chains, and promote the employment of women and

young people through access to land, appropriate funding, and support.

More than 1,500 people, including around twenty heads of state and government, ministers in charge of the economy and finance, ministers for agriculture and related sectors, central bank governors, private sector actors, multilateral organizations, non-governmental organizations, leading academics, and scientists take part in the summit.
