E.U Ambassador: “The Reality of Slavery in Mauritania is Unknown to the West”

H.E. Mr. Jons Guiyllem, the European Union Ambassador to Mauritania, said the West ignores the reality of slavery in Mauritania, stressing that law enforcement remains the best way to combat its aftermaths. He added that the National Human Rights Commission was a trustworthy partner in the eyes of the European Union and that tangible proof of this was that during his last visit to the country, the President of the Council of Europe met only the President of the Republic and the President of the Commission on Human Rights.
Previously, Mr. Ahmed Salem Ould Bouhoubeini, the President of the National Human Rights Commission, had praised the level and quality of cooperation with the European Union, which is participating for the third time in this caravan in the Wilaya of Guidimagha.
It is noteworthy that the main objective of this caravan is to shed more light on the law relating to the criminalization of slavery. It also aims to raise awareness about the mechanisms of complaints with the Commission, including the toll-free number, and meet with people to listen to their demands.
