Prime Minister Receives Democratic Opposition Leader

The Prime Minister, Mr. Mohamed Ould Bilal, received Mr. Ibrahim Ould Bekay, leader of the democratic opposition.

In the wake of the meeting, the opposition leader made a statement to the Mauritanian News Agency, in which he pointed out that his meeting with the prime minister falls within the framework of the regular meetings between the government and the opposition.

He said that today’s meeting discussed on a number of topics, including the dialogue between the different components of the Mauritanian political spectrum, as it is essential and necessary and a tool for the resolving of all fundamental problems of the country.

He added that he discussed with the prime minster the issue of education, its services, and problems in the light of public freedoms that guarantee the right of the citizen to demonstrate peacefully. He expressed his condemnation of what he described as harassments that took place, calling for changes of behavior in this regard.

Ould Bekaye declared that he discussed with the prime minister the issue of price rise and the necessity of the government intervention to help the ordinary citizens and support their purchasing power so that they can enjoy a decent life. In this regard, he said that the prime minister briefed him on the government’s plan to tackle these issues.
