EU Special Representative for Sahel: ?Mauritania Has Developed Successful Strategies and Policies for the Sahel Region?

On 29 June, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, The President of the Republic, received Ms. Emanuela Del Re, the EU Special Representative (EUSR) for the Sahel.

The meeting focused on the areas of cooperation between Mauritania and the EU and the means to develop them in the mutual interest of both parties.

Shortly after the meeting, Ms. Del Re told the Mauritanian news agency that each time she meets the President of the Republic she learns a lot about the situation in the Sahel region, because, she says, ” it is important to listen to what he can suggest as strategies”.

The EUSR explained that her meeting with the President of the Republic allowed her to discuss the Sahel-related issues and the relations between the EU and Mauritania, a country she considers a natural partner.

She added that the meeting also reviewed the economic development and security challenges including the displaced and refugees. Ms. Del Rey said that the relationship with the President of the Republic is fundamental because it allows him to send a political message to Europe based on direct, frank, open, and constructive discussions.
