Prime Minister Chairs Interministerial Meeting on Anti-Gambling and Betting Draft

The Prime Minister, Mr. El Moctar Ould Djay, chaired an interministerial meeting on Thursday evening at the Prime Minister’s Office dedicated to reviewing the preliminary draft law on combating gambling and betting.

The drafting of this preliminary bill is part of the vision of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, aimed at protecting youth and limiting harmful practices facilitated by the proliferation of digital platforms and the risks that may result from them.

The meeting aimed to enable the relevant sectors and parties to review the preliminary draft law and examine its provisions—in accordance with Islamic values—in order to strengthen control over various gambling and betting activities and to criminalize associated practices.

During the meeting, the interministerial committee reviewed the preliminary draft law. Discussions also focused on various measures likely to help combat these phenomena and strengthen coordination among the various sectors and stakeholders involved.

At the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister instructed the stakeholders to deepen their review and enrichment of the preliminary draft law, and to thoroughly address its religious, legal, and technical aspects, with a view to drafting a text that effectively meets the challenges at hand.
