Geneva
This morning, Tuesday, at the United Nations Palace in Geneva, His Excellency the Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action, and Relations with Civil Society, Mr. Sidi Ahmed Ould Benna, presented the national report of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania prepared for the fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review.
In his speech during the session reviewing Mauritania’s national report before the Working Group for the fourth cycle of the review, the Commissioner emphasized that Mauritania’s commitment to respecting and promoting human rights stems, firstly, from the teachings of Islam, which uphold the principle of preserving human dignity and respecting human worth, and from the national constitution, which guarantees, alongside relevant laws, the protection of human rights and public freedoms. He pointed out that this strong commitment is reflected in Mauritania’s accession to all major international human rights instruments, as well as its close and ongoing cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in areas of technical cooperation and capacity building.
