Minister of Energy: We are Committed to Building a Modern and Reliable Electricity System that Meets Scientific and Technical Standards

This morning, Thursday, the National Assembly held a public session chaired by its president, Mr. Mohamed Bemba Meguett, dedicated to hearing the responses of His Ethe Minister of Energy and Oil, Mr. Mohamed Ould Khaled, to an oral question posed to him by Deputy Mohamed Yahya Al-Mustafa.
In his question, the deputy explained that several areas of the country, including the capital Nouakchott, are experiencing frequent power outages, which negatively affect the lives of citizens and impact economic and service activities. He inquired about the measures and actions that the sector intends to take in the short and medium term to reduce power outages and ensure the continuous provision of electricity in a regular and safe manner.
In his response to the question, His Excellency the Minister of Energy and Oil confirmed that the government, under the instructions of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, has established an energy vision based on three main axes: enhancing production capacities through diversifying energy sources, developing transportation and distribution networks, as well as improving the performance of the executive body (SOMELEC) and increasing its efficiency by addressing shortcomings, developing human capital, renewing equipment, and ensuring maintenance follow-up.
The Minister reviewed the measures and procedures undertaken by the sector to ensure the continuity of service and improve the performance of the electrical system in the short, medium, and long term, adding that the government, through the Ministry of Energy and Oil, has adopted a practical, multi-level approach to address these challenges, based on urgent as well as structural measures.
He affirmed that the system performance improvement program is capable of overcoming the sector’s problems, reiterating the commitment of the energy sector to continue working diligently to build a modern and reliable electrical system that meets scientific and technical standards, ensuring the continuity of service to citizens and keeping pace with the country’s economic and social development requirements.
