President of Republic to France 24: “We have chosen the path of security as a pillar of development”

His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, affirmed that Mauritania has chosen the path of security as one of the most important pillars of development. He added that the country’s borders are protected thanks to the vigilance of our armed and security forces.

In an interview with France 24 on Saturday morning, the President of the Republic reviewed the means of defense on which he relies to ensure security, preserve the integrity of the territory, and face all those who dares to undermine its security.

Regarding the Tunisian file, His Excellency the President of the Republic expressed his understanding with respect to the constitutional measures recently decided by the Tunisian President, Kais SAIED, to face the political impasse in Tunisia. He affirmed his confidence in the President’s constitutional choices and experience, which means that he cannot act outside the law.

In his response to the channel’s questions concerning the voices raised in Mali and Burkina Faso calling for dialogue with armed groups, the President of the Republic affirmed Mauritania’s respect for the sovereignty of States, denying in in this context, the existence of any dialogue between Mauritania and these groups.

In response to a question relating to the size of the Barkhane force and the withdrawal of French units from Timbuktu and its effects on the movement of armed groups, the President of the Republic indicated that this measure reduces part of the control over the situation. He affirmed, at the same time, that the G-5 Sahel has counted on the French support present on the ground for years.
