SOMELEC Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Algerian company Sonelgaz

The Minister of Petroleum, Mines, and Energy, Mr. Abdessalem Ould Mohamed Saleh, supervised Tuesday, in the presence of His Excellency Mr. Noureddine Khandoudi, Ambassador of the Algerian Republic, the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Mauritanian Electricity Company “SOMELEC” and the Algerian company Sonelgaz.

This memorandum aims, among other things, to maximize the benefit of both companies from their rich experiences in facing challenges related to electricity.

It also aims to exchange their respective skills in the fields of training, electrical efficiency, renewable energies, rural electrification, and universal access to electricity services.

The Minister welcomed the high-ranking Algerian delegation currently visiting Mauritania and considered that this memorandum represents a remarkable chapter in the fruitful cooperation between Mauritania and Algeria.

He said that SOMELEC has launched few weeks ago an ambitious program to provide electricity to all by 2030.

He added that the technical support and training that “SOMELEC” will benefit from the memorandum would contribute to achieving this ambitious program announced by SOMELEC.

On his part, the Algerian Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Noureddine Khandoudi, stressed that this memorandum is a new building block in the edifice of Mauritanian-Algerian cooperation and congratulated the parties of the memorandum, stressing that he always aspires to see cooperation between Mauritania and Algeria constantly developing.

He declared that the move to open a border crossing between Algeria and Mauritania was an important step on the path to an economic integration “We are seeking to achieve strategic cooperation between Mauritania and Algeria”, he said.

The memorandum was signed on the Mauritanian side by the General Manager of SOMELEC Mr. Cheikh Ould Abdallah Ould Bedda, and on the Algerian side by Mr. Chahar Boulakhras, CEO of Sonelgaz Group.
