Minister of Justice Receives CNDH President

On 19 November in Nouakchott, Minister of Justice Mohamed Ould Soueidatt met with Mr. El Bekaye Abdel Maleck, President of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH).

In a press release following the meeting, the CNDH President stated that his visit was part of the missions entrusted to his commission as a constitutional institution, acting as an advisor to the government and informing the relevant sectors, particularly the Ministry of Justice, of the human rights situation in the country.

He stated that the meeting with the Minister followed Commission visits to major prisons and migrant shelters, and he welcomed the Minister’s positive engagement on raised concerns.

He indicated that the CNDH was satisfied with the measures taken by the Minister following his field visits to prisons and the formation of a committee to deal with cases of pretrial detention, while welcoming the Minister’s understanding of the Commission’s various observations.
