The President of the Republic holds a meeting with the President of the European Commission

The President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, met with the President of the European Commission, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, on Thursday in Brussels, on the sidelines of the Global Gateway 2025 Forum.

During the meeting, the strategic nature of relations between our country and the European Union was emphasized. The strong relations between our country and the European Union, based on common priorities such as clean energy, green hydrogen, the blue economy, digital transition, fisheries, health and migration management, were also discussed.

The strength of the partnership between our country and the European Union is currently benefiting from an investment programme worth €269 million, covering the energy, transport and budget support sectors, reflecting the European Union’s commitment to supporting our country’s efforts in the areas of sustainable development, green transition, strengthening the health sector and migration management.

These investments are spread across several major projects, the most important of which are as follows:

– the extension of the high-voltage power line (225 kV) from Nouakchott to Kiffa, financed by the European Investment Bank to the tune of €125 million, to enable thousands of households to be connected to the electricity grid and to link our country to regional renewable energy markets.

– The €107 million project to modernize the 704 km railway line between Zouerate and Nouadhibou, in order to strengthen iron extraction and export capacities, support local industrial development and put in place the infrastructure necessary for the future use of green hydrogen.

– Budgetary support of €37 million to strengthen green energy programmes, universal health coverage and the management of migration and population displacement issues.

These new commitments are a continuation of the investment programme announced during Ms. von der Leyen’s visit to Nouakchott in February 2024, which has helped to achieve concrete results in the areas of energy and migration, in addition to strengthening health insurance mechanisms.
