The government spokesman said that the public sector recruited 20,400 employees during the first term of the President of the Republic
The Minister of Public Service and Labor, government spokesman, Mr. Mohamed Ould Souedat, stated that the largest recruitment in the history of the public sector occurred during the first term of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, with a total of 20,400 public employees. He emphasized, in response to a question regarding recruitment in the public service, during his comments on the results of the Cabinet meeting held this Wednesday evening at the press room of the Mauritanian News Agency in Nouakchott, along with the Minister in charge of the General Secretariat of the Government, that the competition is the only path to enter the public sector, and that all necessary measures have been taken to enable the National Competition Commission to organize its work. The minister also clarified, in response to a question about wage increases, that His Excellency the President of the Republic tasked the government at the beginning of this year to prepare a study for the purpose of raising wages, which will be presented for social dialogue once completed.
For his part, the Minister in charge of the General Secretariat of the Government, Mr. Mokhtar Al-Hussainou Lam, in his comments on the statement regarding the development of the portfolio of major contracts from March 1 to April 30, 2025, which is supervised by the Prime Minister, confirmed that the percentage of work in the implementation of the urgent program for the city of Nouakchott, which began at the start of this year with an amount nearing 50 billion new ouguiyas, reached 26.7% by April 30, 2025, compared to 13% on February 28, 2025, representing an increase of 13.7 percentage points over two months, which averages 6.8 points per month. He stated that this progress would allow the relevant sectors to complete the work within the specified time frame (16 months), adding that the government would soon launch another program to facilitate access to basic services.
The Minister highlighted that the government is currently executing 99 contracts (each contract exceeding 80 million new ouguiya) across the national territory, distributed among 14 government sectors, with a financial allocation of 49.6 billion new ouguiya. He confirmed that the implementation progress over the last two months reached 58.7% compared to 53.3% on January 28, an increase of 5.4% during the two months.In response to a question about project implementation, His Excellency the Minister emphasized that these projects have seen unprecedented progress since the arrival of His Excellency the President of the Republic to power, especially after strict instructions were given for their implementation. He clarified that the instructions focus on two main points, the first concerning transparency in the bidding process from the first stage to the last stage, while the second point pertains to follow-up and rigor, in accordance with the law and professional procedures.
