Signing a Memorandum of Agreement Between National Agricultural Producers and Vegetable Distributors to Market the National Product

The Minister of Trade and Tourism Mrs. Zeinebou Mint  Ahmednah, the. Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Mr. Momma  Beibatta, and President of the National Union of Mauritanian Employers Mr. Mohamed Zeine El Abidine Cheikh Ahmed, oversaw on Saturday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism, the signing of a memorandum of agreement between national agricultural producers and vegetable distributors to market the national product of this vital material.

The signing of this agreement comes in implementation of the directives of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, aimed at strengthening food sovereignty and achieving food self-sufficiency.

The agreement, which will enter into force from the date of its signature, guarantees the marketing of national production of potatoes and onions, and the commitment of distributors producers and importers to avoid stock shortages or price disruptions, and to provide the product at economically acceptable prices.

According to the memorandum, importers and representatives of the National Union of Potato and Onion Distributors are obliged to purchase the available national product of these materials in accordance with the agreed quality standards, and to package it with the origin of the product, as well as to adhere to the prices specified for the wholesale (onions 14 Ouguiyas per kilogram, potatoes 15 ounces per kilogram).

It was agreed to cap the price for retail sale at 25 ounces per kilogram of potatoes and 24 Ouguiyas per kilogram of onions in order to support the purchasing power of the citizen.

According to the memorandum of agreement, a committee was established to follow up the implementation of the agreement, including the Directorate of Consumer Protection and Fraud Suppression, representing the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism.

The National Company for Rural Development is a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, and a representative of the Federation of Agriculture, which includes the signatories, namely the “Itqan” Group, the National Union of Horticultural Professions, and the Union of Importers.
