Minister of Environment: The sector is in the Process of Acquiring Equipment to Measure Environmental Pollution in Mineral Areas

Nouakchott

The Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Ms. Massouda bint Baham Ould Mohamed Laghdhaf, confirmed that her sector is in the process of acquiring devices to measure environmental pollution in mining areas and possibly in other areas.

During a meeting she held on Sunday evening in the city of Azouerate with stakeholders in the field of community mining, she added that the aim of the meeting is to discuss issues related to environmental conservation and the reduction of chemicals used in community mining to preserve the health of the population and their environmental surroundings.

She explained that the meeting provides an opportunity to consult and listen to opinions and proposals on the most effective ways to preserve the environmental situation in the region.

H.E. President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani, attaches great importance to the preservation of the environment, she said, recalling his visit to the state in 2020, during which he emphasized the importance of finding a balance point between the extraction of mineral resources while taking into account the environmental dimension and public health at the same time.

She warned that the Environmental Assessment Law that was issued in recent weeks, which was a demand of residents and development partners, constitutes a qualitative leap in the field of environmental preservation by enacting deterrent penalties for violators.

During the meeting, participants called for preserving the environment and adopting the utmost care and caution when using chemicals in the field of gold extraction, highlighting the need to use these materials in a way that does not affect the health of citizens and does not harm the natural environment of the region.

The meeting was attended by the acting governor of Thirs Zemmour, Mr. Mokhtar Ould Bab Ould Ahmed; the governor of the Azouerate Province, Mr. Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Sid Ali; the Vice President of the Thirs Zemmour Region, Mr. Ibrahim Ould Wissat; the Assistant Mayor of the Municipality of Azouerate, Ms. Assia Ahmed Bayeh; the President of the Gold Factory Association; several members of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development; administrative and security authorities; some actors in community mining; and civil society organizations.
