President of the Republic, Chairperson of the African Union participates in the 29th Session of Conference of Parties to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

HE President of the Republic, Chairperson of the African Union, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, participated on Tuesday morning in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which kicked off Tuesday in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
The agenda of the summit, organized under the theme “Solidarity for a Green World”, is to discuss urgent climate challenges, seek to crystallize effective strategies to address the phenomenon of global warming and its escalating consequences on the planet, develop practical mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote international cooperation in the field of clean energy, and support developing countries in facing the challenges of climate change.
The President of the Republic delivered an important speech at the opening session of the summit, in which he emphasized that the severity of climate change, due to the steady rise in the temperature of the planet, threatens the continuity of human life and even the continuity of life as it is on the entire planet, calling on everyone to assume their historical responsibilities regarding the need to act quickly to remedy the situation before it is too late.
HE said that Mauritania, despite our marginal contribution (0.02%) to global warming emissions, is living daily the devastating effects of this climate change through the growing phenomenon of desertification and floods and their profound negative repercussions that harm its social fabric, threaten its food security and hinder its economic development.
The opening ceremony of the conference witnessed a commemorative group photo of the heads of state and government participating in the summit before the start of its work.
