The Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development, Mrs. Massoud Baham Mohamed Laghdaf, takes part in the ministerial meeting of the Middle East Green Initiative in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This major event brought together representatives from twenty founding countries, underlining their collective commitment to tackling the region’s crucial environmental challenges.
In her speech, the Minister praised the exemplary leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed ben Salmane, who was behind this ambitious initiative. She highlighted the importance of nature-based solutions to combat ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss, challenges that threaten the region’s environmental sustainability.
The Minister also referred to the initiative’s flagship goal of planting 50 billion trees and rehabilitating 200 million hectares of land in member countries. This project, which should contribute to a significant reduction in global carbon emissions, illustrates the commitment of nations to work together for a greener future.
She emphasized Saudi Arabia’s central role in this initiative, highlighting the pressing climate challenges affecting the Middle East, North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
The meeting also aims to ensure that the region’s environmental priorities are taken into account on the international stage.
Discussions at the Ministerial Council resulted in strategic decisions, including the creation of institutional mechanisms for the initiative, the accession of ten new countries, and the establishment of the Green Middle East Initiative Fund, which will be used to finance sustainable projects in the region.
