The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) has congratulated Mauritania for fulfilling its regional human rights commitments.
The congratulations, which Mauritania received on Wednesday during the first forum of the Member States of the African Charter on Human and Peoples‘ Rights, held on the sidelines of the 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul, is a recognition of the great efforts that Mauritania has made and is making to promote and protect human rights.
In a statement issued today, the Commission for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society noted that the congratulations of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to our country highlight the efforts made by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, to promote transparency, advance human rights and fulfil the commitments made at the regional level.
By submitting its reports on time, our country confirms its commitment to the implementation of human rights protection mechanisms and continuous dialogue with the monitoring and evaluation bodies of the African Charter, the OHCHR added in the statement.
The Commission reiterated Mauritania’s commitment to continue efforts to promote and protect human rights, noting that this achievement reflects the country’s strong will to honour its international and regional commitments and ensure the promotion and protection of human rights.
The Commission for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society emphasised in the statement that it will maintain this positive momentum and continue to work closely with African human rights mechanisms to improve the human rights situation in the country.
We note that Mauritania is among ten countries out of fifty-four States Parties that have fulfilled their obligations regarding the submission of periodic reports to this African body mandated by the African Union to monitor the implementation of the provisions of the Charter by States Parties.
