OHCHR: Mauritania’s Ranking in the Second Level on the Human Trafficking Index is Recognition of its Efforts to Promote and Protect Rights and Freedoms

The Commission on Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society confirmed that our country maintains its ranking in the second level on the Human Trafficking Index, in the annual report of the US Department of State for the period from On this occasion, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society extended its warmest congratulations and blessings to all governmental and non-governmental actors, stressing its determination to move forward in preserving these gains and continuing positive interaction with the various international mechanisms for the protection of human rights.
Mauritania’s ranking in the second level on the human trafficking index, which is an international recognition of its tremendous efforts to promote and protect rights and freedoms and preserve human dignity, is the fruit of the climate of openness and constructive dialogue with various actors established by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, during his first mission, which resulted in remarkable progress in the promotion and protection of human rights, the Commission said in a press briefing issued on Thursday.
The Commission pointed out that the report touched on the overall progress made by our country in the field of combating human trafficking, reviewing the measures taken to enhance the prevention of the phenomenon, the available protection mechanisms, the effectiveness and effectiveness of judicial follow-up, and efforts for international and local cooperation and coordination to eliminate human trafficking.
She pointed out that the report reviewed the efforts made by the Mauritanian government in this field, which included the establishment of official partnerships with civil society organizations to run the Fund to Support and Assist Victims and provide services to victims of slavery practices, intensify investigations, judicial prosecutions and convictions of traffickers, under the 2020-017 law criminalizing trafficking in persons and the 2015 slavery law, and awareness campaigns against trafficking and slavery organized by the National Authority to Combat Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants, affiliated to UNHCR, in addition to the adoption of a new national action plan.
The report stressed that our country is making great efforts to eradicate human trafficking, and that the Mauritanian government has shown increasing efforts overall compared to the previous reporting period.
