President of Republic Receives Written Message From Brazilian Counterpart

On 20 May, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic and Chairman of the African Union, received a written message from His Excellency Mr. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the President of the Federal Republic of Brazil.

This message was delivered to His Excellency, the President of the Republic, by Mr. Felipe Hesse, the Special Envoy of the Brazilian President.

Shortly after the end of the meeting, the Brazilian President’s envoy made a statement in which he expressed his pleasure to visit Mauritania and meet His Excellency the President of the Republic, adding that it was a great honor for Brazil to welcome His Excellency the President of the Republic to the G20 Summit in his capacity as representative of the African Union, which is participating for the first time in the Summit, as a member of the group, and it is also the first time that Mauritania participates in G20 meetings.

”While being an opportunity to promote the interests of developing countries on the international stage, the G20 summit scheduled for next November in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, also represents a unique opportunity for Brazilian and Mauritanian presidents to meet to discuss issues of common interest to strengthen bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, as the Brazilian messenger put it. He stressed that the summit will be widely publicized in Brazil and internationally, a rare opportunity to make the voices of developing countries heard at the international level and advance their choices.

This event will allow the press to address the issues that concern the countries of the South, the opportunities offered to them, and the expectations that they have.

Mr. Felipe Hesse then discussed the issues that the Brazilian Summit Presidency cares about, including firstly, its vision of social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty; secondly, the priority to be given to sustainable development in all its aspects, not only environmental but also and above all economic and social, and thirdly the interest in reviewing the institutions of global governance in the direction of change and adaptation from these to the new context of independent and sovereign nations.

It is precisely the message that President Lula da Silva asked him to convey to His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the African Union.
