On 7 May, in Geneva, Mr. Mohamed Abdallahi LOULY, the Minister of Digital Transformation, Innovation, and Modernization of Administration, met with Ms. Doreen Bogdan Martin, the Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), on the sidelines of the summit of the “Intergovernmental Group of Experts on E-commerce and the Digital Economy”, organized by UNCTAD.
During this meeting, the Minister discussed with the ITU’s Secretary-General various points relating to cooperation between Mauritania and this international organization.
Among the topics discussed, the possibility of obtaining ITU support in several strategic areas, such as capacity building in the design and implementation of digital infrastructure projects, active involvement in projects linked to artificial intelligence, particularly those aimed at promoting inclusive education, the strengthening of initiatives aimed at making major language model projects accessible to all countries, cybersecurity, the possibility of benefiting from the GIGA initiative, which aims to connect all schools to the Internet and offer all young people access to information and opportunities offered by the digital world or the possibility for Mauritanian executives to benefit from internships within the ITU to strengthen their expertise and contribute to the mission of this UN institution.
In addition, other topics falling within the sphere of responsibility of the Ministry were discussed during the meeting.
For her part, the Secretary-General expressed her firm desire to support Mauritania, not only on the points mentioned above but also in other areas promoting its digital transformation.
This meeting demonstrates the mutual commitment between Mauritania and the ITU to strengthen cooperation in information and communication technologies to promote the country’s socio-economic development.
