On 17 February, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic and President-in-Office of the African Union, accompanied by Mr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the Federal Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, supervised the ceremony to unveil the statue of the late Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere, considered one of the most eminent African leaders defenders of African unity and the most opposed to the colonial presence on the African continent.
Through his political wisdom, Nyerere managed to unify the regions of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which later became the Federal Republic of Tanzania in 1964. He also played a pioneering role in supporting liberation movements on the African continent.
