Joint Communiqué From Oil Ministers of Senegal, Mauritania Regarding GTA Project

The Minister of Oil, Mines, and Energy of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Minister of Oil and Energy of the Republic of Senegal, accompanied by their respective collaborators, held working meetings on 18 and 19 January 2024 in Dakar as part of the joint monitoring of the development of the gas resources of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim Field (GTA) through the GTA Consultative Commission.

These permanent consultation meetings between the two countries made it possible to assess the impact of the delay recorded in the execution of the project and the announced cost increases.

In pursuance of the instructions given by the Heads of State of Senegal and Mauritania and in accordance with their perfect convergence of views, the two ministers reaffirmed, in a joint communiqué, their constant determination to work for the success of the project, guarantee the rights of contractors, and preserve the interests of their nations in connection with the GTA project, the start of gas production of which is now planned for the 3rd quarter of 2024. The communiqué indicates that aware of the strategic importance of this project, given its expected contribution to the economic development of their countries, the ministers and their teams remain vigilant about the operational, economic, and financial conditions of the development of shared resources in partnership with BP and Kosmos Energy.

The commiuniqué concludes that to this end, the ministers will maintain their permanent consultations to ensure the project’s economic viability while preserving their respective populations’ interests.
