UN Human Rights Commissioner Holds Talks with UNHCR Representative in Mauritania

On Wednesday 10 January at his office in Nouakchott, the Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society, Cheikh Ahmedou Ould Ahmed Salem Ould Sidi, received the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Mauritania, Ms. Elisabeth Eister.

The meeting touched on areas of cooperation between UNHCR and this UN body, especially in issues related to the mobilization of UNHCR with the aim of promoting the rights of migrants and asylum seekers, and establishing a framework for exchange between UNHCR and the National Authority to Combat Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling, on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants.

During the meeting, they also discussed mechanisms for implementing activities that contribute to the prevention efforts against forced begging, organizing awareness-raising and training activities for refugees on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, and other forums that bring together refugees and local populations on the same topics.
