Nouakchott Set To Host African Conference for Promoting Peace

The African Conference for Promoting Peace will hold its fourth international forum from 9 to 11 January in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, under the high patronage of His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, the President of the Republic.

The conference organizers chose the theme “Traditional Education in Africa: Science and Peace”, in conjunction with the historic decision of the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to include the Mauritanian Museum on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The African Conference welcomed this approach, which reflects the great attention paid by His Excellency the President of the Republic to the Mahadra and its results to encourage and preserve the scientific, cultural, religious, and intellectual heritage of this traditional protective institution against extinction and disappearance, faced with the surging torrent of globalization and the crisis of ideas which threaten the cultural identity of the countries of the continent.

The fourth forum deals, in this context, with traditional education, represented by the creativity of the historical experience of African societies in terms of traditional educational institutions, which have always been roots of authentic knowledge, bridges of communication and joyful coexistence, impenetrable fortresses in the world against excess of extremism and calls for division and difference.

Koranic schools have remained, throughout the ages, incubators of the values of peace and fraternity and tributaries of authentic African Islamic identity.

In presenting this important topic, the African Conference for Promoting Peace, as a platform for fruitful partnership and beneficial dialogue, between decision-makers, religious leaders, and various societal elites, seeks to contribute – with its other partners from regional organizations and international institutions – to examine how traditional education can regain its full role and effectiveness in promoting peace and the spirit of harmony and strengthening the immunity of societies against extremist ideas.

It also aims to explore appropriate ways to enrich this authentic experience with the latest modern educational approaches.

His Excellency Mr. Adama Barrow, the President of the Gambia, and winner of the Africa Prize for Promoting Peace, awarded each year to a President active in the field of dialogue, reconciliation, and peace will be present at this fourth edition of the conference.

The second edition of the Summit of Young People and Women Peacemakers in Africa, organized under the theme: “Traditional Education: Fortification and Empowerment”, will also be held within the framework of this conference, under the patronage of the First Lady, Dr. Mariem Mohamed Fadel Dah.

This summit provides an opportunity for serious dialogue between youth and women leaders with decision-makers and Ulemas to present their ideas and highlight their points of view on issues of peace and the future of the continent.

The annual international forum of the African Peace Conference is considered the most important intellectual and cultural event on the African continent, bringing together decision-makers from the continent’s presidents, representatives of African governments, presidents of fatwa councils, great Ulemas, preachers, leaders of religious issues alongside the most eminent youth leaders and feminists to propose scientific and intellectual approaches that benefit people and remain on earth.
