On Tuesday 12 December, in Geneva, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mr. Abdessalam Mohamed Saleh, held talks with Mr. Raouf Mazo, Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees.
During the talks, various aspects of cooperation between our country and the OIC were discussed, where His Excellency the Minister appreciated the efforts of UNHCR in helping and caring for refugees.
The minister also gave a presentation on the situation of refugees in Mauritania, highlighting the various aspects of assistance provided by our country to alleviate their suffering, and expressed the need for concerted efforts with UNHCR to increase the mobilization of financial resources to meet all the needs of refugees, enhance resilience, preserve the environment and ensure peaceful coexistence with the local population.
For his part, the Assistant Commissioner appreciated Mauritania’s efforts, openness and assistance to Malian refugees, despite the high cost of providing the basic needs of these refugees (health, education, security, social protection…) The Assistant Commissioner also praised Mauritania’s unprecedented rights to refugees.
He stressed that Mauritania is a model in addressing the refugee file in the subregion, and called for the need to maintain these efforts.
