President of Republic Receives UN Secretary General’s Envoy for West Africa, Sahel

The President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani received, Wednesday afternoon at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott, the special envoy of the UN Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, who is currently visiting Mauritania.

After the meeting, the UN official made a statement to the Mauritanian news agency (AMI)in which he said he was happy to have been received by the President of the Republic and noted that the meeting was an opportunity to discuss the situation at the level of the G-5 Sahel. “It was also an opportunity for me to congratulate the President of the Republic for the good outcome of his past presidency of the Group. This is how during this period, privileged relations characterized our relations as part of the close cooperation between the United Nations and the G-5 Sahel, which is also continuing”, as he put it.

The UN envoy highly appreciated the positive climate which marked the Mauritanian presidency of the G-5 Sahel and the relations between the G-5 Sahel and the United Nations and with the international community in general.

On this occasion, he expressed his gratitude to His Excellency the President of the Republic for the level of relations between the United Nations and Mauritania, which has been reflected positively on the work of the United Nations system in Mauritania despite the significant challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic which has threatened the whole world.

Despite that, the United Nations system in Mauritania has been able to work positively to face those major challenges.
“I cannot miss this opportunity to thank the President of the Republic for his constant availability to receive me each time I arrive in this country known for its hospitality and where I am happy to be whenever I get the chance”, as he said.

Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas finally expressed the readiness of the United Nations to cooperate with Mauritania and provide support in all areas.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Mohamed Ahmed Ould Mohamed Lamine, Director of Cabinet of the President of the Republic, Mr. Sidi Ould Domane, Officer in Charge of Special Duties at the Presidency of the Republic, and Mr. Anthony Kwaku Ohemeng Boamah, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system in Mauritania.
