The Islamic Republic of Mauritania has strongly condemned the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran by a Swedish extremist in the capital, Stockholm.
In a statement released on 20 July by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, it denounced the permission by the Swedish authorities to repeat such a heinous act.
The statement reads as follows:
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad strongly condemns the insult and the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran in the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The Mauritanian government, while renewing its condemnation of the Swedish authorities who have allowed the repetition of this heinous act, which represents an unacceptable provocation to the feelings of all Muslims and which contradicts the values of dialogue and the fundamental principles of human rights, calls on the international community to stand firmly against the destructive extremist currents that threaten the peaceful coexistence between people and cultures.”
