Environment Minister Receives UNCCD Executive Secretary

On 24 March, Ms. Mariem Bekaye, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, received Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Who is visiting Mauritania.

This meeting is part of the preparation for the next Conference of the Parties to the Convention to Combat Desertification (COP 15) to be held in Abidjan from 9 to 30 May 2022.

The discussion touched on the mechanism for preparing for the high-level meeting and ministerial round tables, which will address the issues related to the future of land governance, restoration of degraded land, ecosystems, and communities’ resilience to drought.

For our country, the Cop 15 summit will be an occasion to pursue efforts to promote the Great Green Wall as a flagship program that will transform rural production systems and increase the chances of improving people’s living conditions
On the sidelines of the conference, Mauritania will organize a side event on the promotion and role of agricultural environmental practices to reduce land degradation.
