During a plenary session held on 30 January under the chairmanship of its first Deputy Speaker, Mr. Ahamdi Ould Hamadi, the National Assembly approved a bill on a partnership agreement in sustainable fishing between Mauritania and the European Union, signed on 15 November 2021 in Brussels.
In his speech before the MPs, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Sidina Ould Ahmed Ely, Acting Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, explained that this agreement concluded with the European Union for six years replaces the agreement in force since 2006.
He added that the agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between the two parties in maritime fishing and will allow European fleets to fish in waters subject to Mauritanian laws.
The Minister explained that the agreement is the fruit of three years of negotiation in a context marked by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that Mauritania and the EU agreed to renew the implementation protocol every five years with the possibility of amending it within the framework of the joint commission depending on the conditions of activity of the fleet and the state of fish stocks.
