International Fisheries Transparency Council recognizes Mauritania as Compliant with its Standards
Nouakchott
The International Board of the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) has officially announced that Mauritania has been awarded the status of “Overall Compliant” with the FiTI Standard, in recognition of its significant progress in implementing transparency standards in the fisheries sector during the period from April 2022 to July 2024.
The announcement was the culmination of the country’s second regular assessment, the results of which were approved by the EITI Board of Directors at its 29th meeting on April 3, 2025.
Confirmation of this important achievement was contained in a letter dated May 9, 2025, from Dr. Valeria Merino, Chair of the International Council of the Fisheries Transparency Initiative, to Mr. Sidi Aly Sidi Boubacar, National Officer and Chair of the National Multilateral Group of the Initiative in Mauritania.
In her letter, Dr. Merino, on behalf of the International Council, expressed her sincere congratulations to Mauritania on this “significant achievement,” which makes it one of the first EITI countries to achieve this advanced level of compliance.
She emphasized that the decision to grant “compliant” status was taken unanimously during the aforementioned meeting of the International Board.
The letter commended Mauritania’s ongoing efforts to promote transparency in the management of the fisheries sector since joining EITI, noting that during the second evaluation period, the country has increased the amount of information available in its EITI reports and on official government websites, in addition to improving the quality, accessibility, and understandability of data on the sector for the general public.
