Environment Minister holds high-level meetings in New York

On the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, currently taking place in New York, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Ms. Messouda Baham Ould Mohamed Laghdhaf, made several high-level contacts and meetings, during which she reiterated Mauritania’s commitment to energy transition and sustainable development.

During the Global Renewable Energy Summit, organised by several high-level bodies, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development highlighted Mauritania’s ambitious initiatives under the Global Decarbonisation Accelerator Programme, which aims to double global renewable energy capacity by 2030.

This plan requires an estimated investment of $4.7 trillion, she said, stressing the need to replace fossil energies, which are still at the forefront, with renewable energies to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

She noted that this global effort requires a significant mobilisation of financial resources as well as technological transformation, which are key topics that will be at the centre of the discussions and deliberations at COP29.
