Prime Minister Participates in Round Table on Energy Sector in Africa

On 8 May, in Dallas (United States of America), the Prime Minister, Mr. Mohamed Ould Bilal Massaoud, participated in a round table on the energy sector in Africa as part of the US-Africa Economic Partnership Summit.

The meeting focused on high-level discussions between a group of eminent specialists in the energy and oil industry in Africa, presenting perspectives and visions for the future development of this key sector in Africa.

At the beginning of his speech to the participants, the Prime Minister declared that the priority of all countries, especially on the African continent, in the field of energy, is to put in place policies to find energy resources and extract what is available by all means to guarantee universal access to energy and achieve economic and social development while adopting an approach that reduces the carbon footprint of economic growth and fights climate change.

He pointed out that Africa has enormous gas and oil resources, most of which have not yet been exploited and stressed the crucial importance of developing these resources to obtain electricity, develop industries, promote industrialization on the continent, and develop agriculture.

He explained that our country, with the discovery of vast gas resources and the adoption of a strategy to begin the path of energy transition, is developing several gas projects, such as the Greater Tortue Ahmeyem project jointly with neighboring Senegal, which has reached the production phase with the installation of a production and pre-processing unit (FPSO). The second gas project is the “Birallah” field, one of the largest offshore gas discoveries since 2019, which now constitutes a real investment opportunity in Mauritania.

He also indicated that the future of the energy sector in Africa will essentially depend on a rapid and equitable energy transition, the exploitation of the continent’s gas resources, and the development of solar energy resources.

He called on participants to take advantage of the great opportunities offered by our country in the field of renewable energy, including green hydrogen.
