Foreign Minister Chairs AU Executive Council Meeting Preparing for Africa Fertilizer, Soil Health Summit

On 8 May, in Nairobi, Kenya, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, chaired the extraordinary session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), with the participation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture, in preparation for the Extraordinary Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit to be held tomorrow, 9 May, in Nairobi.

Opening the session, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad declared that the extraordinary summit on fertilizers and soil health is part of the AU’s efforts to find effective ways to address the challenges facing our continent in the food security area.

After thanking his Kenyan hosts for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him, Mr. Ould Merzoug congratulated the Kenyan government for its tireless efforts to ensure the success of this Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health summit, held in this green capital in application of the decision of the 37th AU summit held in Addis Ababa in February 2024 and which saw HE Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, assume the current presidency of the African Union.

He conveyed to the honorable assembly the warm greetings of the President of the Republic and his wishes for success in the work, and his most sincere condolences to all the Kenyan people following the heavy loss of human lives and infrastructure caused by the floods and rains that hit the country.

The Minister took the opportunity to salute the remarkable action deployed by the ministers of agriculture to prepare the meeting on a technical level.

He also thanked his brother and friend Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the AU Commission,  for the considerable efforts he has been making with the Commission team to move the African continent forward and achieve its Agenda. 2063 to realize the aspirations of our people for a stable Africa that meets all the requirements for sustainable and inclusive growth, which this summit aims to achieve.
