The President of the Republic to the executives of Hodh Charghi: The promotion of livestock is achieved through the exploitation of derivatives and artificial insemination

“To ensure the promotion of the livestock sector, we have opted for the exploitation of derivatives and artificial insemination”. This is what the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, said, on Wednesday evening in Timbedra, in front of the executives and notables of Hodh Charghi.

In his responses to the various interventions, the President of the Republic first underlined the importance and relevance of the various contributions presented during the meeting and described them as ‘strategic visions and opinions’.

“Your contributions are in a way very important suggestions and reflect the feeling that animates the citizen about what they lack or the essential services from which they must benefit and which are in fact legitimate rights for each compatriot. They were high-level and mature interventions. They were essentially based on issues of concern to the inhabitants”, noted the President of the Republic.

With respect to the livestock sector, the essential theme of the Timbedra fair, the President of the Republic underlined the identity of views regarding the pivotal role of livestock in our economic system, and the constraints and challenges it is currently facing. “Intense efforts must be made to address the multiple obstacles hindering the renaissance of the livestock sector”.

“In my opinion, the major challenge facing the sector remains the abundance of livestock and its extensive nature. Estimates show more than twenty million head of all species. Promoting animal resources of this scale implies the modernization of the exploitation of this herd, the rationalization of its management, and its distribution in space, across the national territory, where there are activities that can consolidate this sector”, he added.

Regarding the approach he considers best suited, the President of the Republic explained that it relates to the modernization of the sector as is done in other countries, the exploitation of derivatives and the artificial insemination to improve its different species. Likewise, external markets must be sought for marketing national consumption surplus.

“Only red meat is currently subject to this procedure. From now on we must identify the quantities of livestock that can be exploited for this process. The other herds must be the object of promotion and organization, which are essential to make the sector profitable, especially since in Mauritania livestock exists and represents a significant fortune “, as the President of the Republic put it.
