Meeting in Nouakchott To Consolidate Relations Between Mauritania, European Union

A political dialogue meeting between Mauritania and the European Union was held on Friday in Nouakchott, under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, Mr. Mohamed Ould Bilal Messoud.

The meeting, which aims to consolidate and deepen relations between Mauritania and the European Union, made it possible to review topics of common interest relating to bilateral relations and sub-regional and international issues, namely migration, human rights, the G-5 Sahel, climate change, and energy transition.

It also focused on the expanded priority program of the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the debt issue, the reform of the education system, access to the COVID-19 vaccine, and the implementation of the national pandemic control strategy.

A joint statement released after the meeting indicates that the discussions, conducted in an atmosphere of trust and mutual understanding, were enriching for all participants. The statement underlines that the parties have renewed their commitment to continue consultations based on constructive dialogue with a view to a fruitful partnership.

The meeting was attended on the Mauritanian side by the Minister Secretary General of the Presidency and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, Interior and Decentralization, Economic Affairs and Promotion of Productive Sectors, Finance, National Education, Technical Training, and Reform, Oil, Mines, and Energy, Health, Environment and Sustainable Development, as well as the Secretary General of the Government, the Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action, and Relations with Civil Society, and the Director of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet.

On the European side, the following were present: the ambassadors of the European Union and of the member states residing in Mauritania, namely Germany, Spain, and France.

It should be noted that political dialogue meetings between the European Union and Mauritania are organized on a regular basis under Article 8 of the Cotonou Agreement, which constitutes the framework for relations between the European Union and the countries of the Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP).
