President of Republic Receives AFD Director General
On 30 March, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, received Mr. Remy Rioux, the Director General of the French Development Agency (AFD).
At the end of the meeting, the AFD Director General made the following statement to the Mauritanian news agency:
“Thank you all. I am Remy Rioux, Director General of the AFD group. I am happy to be received by the President of the Republicthis morning. It was an opportunity to express our respect and support, and to congratulate Mauritania, the Minister, and his government for its great stability, the performance of its economy, and its public management in the service of the populations.
It was also an opportunity, of course, to carry out a complete review with the President of the AFD portfolio in the country, i.e. more than 200 million being executed; a lot of work in the field of water, entrepreneurship, education, energy, and other areas, such as health. We are going to the blood transfusion center after this meeting and, above all, to announce to the President of the Republic that France, via the AFD, was going to resume its financing in Mauritania, which we had to interrupt in 2015. This will allow us to double this funding and, of course, we asked what were the main priorities of the country, within the framework of its development policy, toward which we can direct these investments, not only those of France but also with all the partners of the country that we met this morning.
The meeting also focused on bilateral cooperation and the situation in the sub-region at a time when Mauritania agreed to take over the presidency of the G-5 Sahel. And I came, here too, to confirm our commitment that of AFD for development issues in the whole of the Sahel, where the AFD is a member of the Sahel Alliance with 27 other international members and which will meet soon in Nouakchott show its support, take stock of the many investments that are being made throughout the region, and imagine the roadmap drawn up by the President and the authorities of the region and the new stage in terms of development for the Sahel.
