On 29 March, the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, participated, at the invitation of His Excellency Joe Biden, the President of the United States of America, in the work of the 2nd session of the “Summit for Democracy 2023” which was held in Washington, with an important speech, via videoconference.
His Excellency the President has delegated Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, to represent our country in the opening session and the round table chaired by the President
Joe Biden.
During the different sessions of the summit, the main focus was on strengthening democracy by supporting freedom and independence of the media, fighting corruption, promoting human rights
, and developing technologies that improve democracy and free and transparent elections.
It is noteworthy that our country was invited to participate in this summit, in the context of a general improvement in relations between it and the United States of America, after the US authorities had appreciated the national efforts aimed at strengthening the
rule of law, achieving social justice, protecting human rights, and playing a distinct geostrategic role in the sub-region to establish security and peace and create conditions for inclusive development.
