President of Republic Oversees Signing of MoU between Mauritania, BP on Green Hydrogen

On the sidelines of the 27th United Nations climate change conference (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, the President of the Republic, H.E. Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, oversaw the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Mauritania and British Petroleum (BP) regarding studies to develop a large-scale green hydrogen project.

The MoU was signed on the Mauritanian side by Mr. Abdessalam Ould Mohamed Saleh, the Minister of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines, and on the BP side by Mr. Bernard Looney, the CEO of BP.

Under this MoU, BP undertakes to conduct technical and commercial studies to assess the production potential of a large green hydrogen project in Mauritania.

If the studies confirm the results, the potential production capacity targeted by the project could reach 30 gigawatts, to produce 2 million tons of green hydrogen annually.
