President of Republic Inaugurates Integrated Artisanal, Semi-industrial Mining Project

On Monday in the city of Chami, The President of the Republic, H.E. Mr. Mohamed OULD Cheikh El Ghazouani, inaugurated an integrated artisanal and semi-industrial mining project.

This project will allow the drilling of 20 wells to make water available on gold mining sites, as well as the construction of a 40 km water supply network in the gold panning center of Sheikh Mohamed El Mamy, the installation of six desalination units, the acquisition of six tanker trucks, four heavy machinery, and four ambulances.

This integrated project also includes the construction of two gold-processing centers. One of which bears the name of Sheikh Mohamed El Mamy mining center located in the city of Chami, and the other, called Sid’Ahmed Ould Ahmed Aïda, is located in the region of Tiris-Zemmour. These two centers will each be able to accommodate 3000 crushing units, and each has a sanatorium and mosque with a capacity of 1000 worshippers.

This project also aims to open up the traditional gold-panning areas through the construction of a 29km stabilized earth road, called the Sheikh Sid’Ahmed El Kounti road, which will connect the Taziast and Tijirit areas.

Another component of the project includes the installation of 10 cellular telecommunication towers and 160 reflective signs on the Zouerate-Cheguatt axis, the construction of rest areas, the acquisition of safety equipment for traditional gold panners, distribution of an emergency guide, and the construction of premises for security services.

In his intervention, the Director-General of Maaden Mauritania, Hamoud Ould M’Hamed, gave a technical presentation on the project and its expected positive impacts on the artisanal and semi-industrial mining field and national economy.

At the end of the inauguration ceremony, the President of the Republic cut the symbolic ribbons and unveiled the commemorative plaque of this important project.
