On 24 March, in Geneva, Ms. Mariem Mint Boydiel Ould Houmeid, Minister of Public Service and Labor, held a meeting with Mr. Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director General of the International Labor Office (ILO), as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between Mauritania and this organization in the areas of labor and social protection.
The meeting focused on ongoing preparations for the national social security forums scheduled for next April in Nouakchott, with particular emphasis on the importance of this event as a national platform for dialogue among various stakeholders.
The two parties also discussed the ILO Office’s role in supporting these forums, particularly through the provision of technical expertise and tailored support, to ensure their success and the achievement of the set objectives.
Discussions also touched on ways to support workers’ professional organizations and strengthen their capacities, particularly following the completion of the process to determine trade union representativeness. Both parties emphasized the importance of training and skills-building programs to enable these organizations to fully play their role in defending workers’ rights and contributing to public policy.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the strong cooperative relationship between Mauritania and the ILO Office, as well as a shared commitment to continue coordination to promote the development of the labor sector and the social security system in accordance with international standards.
