Economic Affairs Minister Discusses With Partners Emergency Plan for Refugees

On 13 January, in Nouakchott, Mr. Abdallahi Souleymane Cheikh Sidiya, Minister of Economic Affairs and Development, held a meeting with certain partners to present the emergency plan for refugees for 2026 and review the results of the plan for 2025.

During the presentation of the 2025 plan review, support was provided to more than 471,000 people, including refugees, returnees, and the host population, through a multidimensional approach covering food security, water and sanitation, health, education, civil protection, and livelihoods.

The total financial requirements for the 2025 plan have been estimated at approximately US$152.2 million, mobilized by 15 partners, with the majority allocated to food security, cash transfers, water, health, and protection.

The 2026 emergency plan for refugees aims to reinforce this approach by adopting a proactive and forward-looking approach, enabling national institutions and partners to prepare for possible new influxes, reduce response times, and limit the humanitarian, economic, social, and environmental impacts on host areas.

This plan is based on three main pillars: ensuring a rapid and coordinated humanitarian response in the event of a mass influx, to cover essential needs in terms of protection, food, water, health, and shelter; strengthening the resilience and empowerment of refugees and host communities by improving access to social services, supporting livelihoods, and strengthening social cohesion; and improving governance and coordination by aligning humanitarian responses with national development priorities.
